The Environmental Working Group, a US non-profit organization, conducted a national assessment of tap water quality in 2005, which found:
- 140 unregulated chemicals in tap water - these are chemicals from various agricultural and industrial sources for which the EPA has set no safety guidelines.
- Over 195 million people in 23,000 communities are exposed to these chemicals.
These chemicals are linked to cancer, reproductive effects, developmental effects, and immune system damage.
