Construction of this Living Machine was completed in the Summer 2007. In the past, sewege from agjacent community entered a primary treatment tank and was released directly into the Sakumono Lagoon, an important wetland perserve protected by the international Ramsar Convention. This Lagoon and many other waterways in the areas of Africa have been adversely affested by sewege and industrial pollution reducing the productivity of important coastal fisheries. Now the wastewater from the primary tank enters the Living Machine and the treated water is pumped into an irrigation system to support agriculture and to the adjoinging wetland to foster healthy plant and animal life. This demostration system has 8,000 GPD wastewater capacity, and serves approximately 60 homes in the community.
